As a parent, you play a crucial role in supporting your student's education. As the new academic year approaches, it's important to stay informed about the latest initiatives that can enhance your student's learning experience. One such initiative is Day One Access (D1A), a program designed to provide affordable and accessible course materials to students by having instructors use interactive courseware platforms and digital books. In this post, we’re covering important details about the program, so if your student has a class or two this fall that allows D1A, you’ll have no worries!
Empowering Students and Reducing Costs
- Students pay less than the cost of the traditional printed materials sold in the bookstore, with savings up to 80%.
- Students can choose if they want to use D1A. They can "try before they buy" with D1A since they have free digital access until the end of the Drop/Add period to use the materials. During this time, they can opt-out, thus losing their access, and not be billed for the materials.
- Students save time and frustration as course materials are automatically available digitally on the first day of class.
- Students are more successful in courses that use D1A due to being prepared on the first day of class and increased interaction with course content.
Two Types of Day One Access Materials
Digital Textbooks
- D1A digital textbook materials are electronic textbooks (eBook) made available to students through the Desire to Learn (D2L) learning management software. Students can find their eBooks (if applicable) under the "Content" tab in D2L on or after the first day of class.
Courseware
- D1A courseware materials are found on your course's home screen or via a link provided by your professor. Courseware is for homework and other assignments. Students may need to register the product after clicking the link in D2L before the Drop/Add deadline at the beginning of each semester in order to continue accessing the material.
Some instructors will use both eBooks and courseware, while others will only use one or the other. Students should refer to the email they receive from dayone@kennesaw.edu to their student email account to know which materials are for which courses, or they can inquire with the faculty member teaching the class.
Simplifying the Process – How It Works
Instructors choose the course content they would like to use, and the KSU Bookstore works with the publisher to negotiate the lowest price available in the marketplace.
When students register for a class using D1A, they will receive an email one week before classes start, and then a reminder the day before the opt-out/opt-in deadline. The email will include the required materials, the pricing for each, and a personalized link to opt-out/opt-in should you choose to do so. Your student should NOT share this link.
On the first day of class, access is granted to all enrolled students via D2L. Once the Drop/Add period has closed, the KSU Bookstore bills each student's Owl Express account for the cost of the D1A materials. Students who have opted out or dropped the course during the Drop/Add period are automatically opted out and not charged.
As a parent, you have the opportunity to empower your student's learning journey by staying informed and engaged. D1A is a game-changer, providing affordable, convenient and accessible course materials that can enhance your student's academic success. By utilizing this innovative program, your student will have a head start on their coursework, save money on traditional textbook costs and be fully prepared from day one!
